MPH Hits Manly

By: Mike Frost on: 08.07.05

While a massive banner was unfurled on the northern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a bunch of us at smallboatbigsea, together with members of the Manly community who share our heart for global justice, were promoting the cause in Manly. We set up on the wharf on the morning of the MPH global white band day (July 1) and on the Corso on the following day (Saturday, July 2) and sold white bands, asked passers-by to sign postcards that were sent to John Howard (insisting he come good on the Millennium Development Goals) and sought to raise awareness of global poverty.

The reaction was awesome! Thousands of white bands were distributed, and hundreds of postcards were signed. We had over 50 volunteers promoting the cause and it looks like the Make Poverty History campaign is getting legs on the north side of Sydney. It happens again in September, when our focus will be on agitating to have John Howard attend a UN summit on poverty. Stay tuned for more on this…. Or call Lee Mangion on 0422719249.
